Maximizing Products’ Sustainability Performance and Circularity with Digitalization – Part 2/3

Written by Rupert Baumgartner & Magdalena Rusch | 07/28/2020

The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sustainable Product Management is a 7-year project with a detailed working plan for each year to achieve its objectives. So far, the research team is quite good on track with the research output both in quantitative and qualitative terms, and many activities in the scientific community as well as in forms of “science to public” events can be reported:

Use cases

The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sustainable Product Management enabling a Circular Economy collects data on the entire life cycle of products and services and defines corresponding sustainability and circularity principles. Close cooperation with companies with a focus on the automotive and packaging industries that want to develop further in the direction of a Circular Economy forms the basis. Two specific use cases are defined to test and further enhance theoretical concepts: Use case one includes several companies in the automotive sector to answer the question: “How can sustainable circular economy practices be realized along a full value chain?” Specific foci in the automotive use case lie (1) on the development of a dynamic product declaration for vehicle traction batteries and  (2) the determination of a lifecycle sustainability optimum of an automotive component for its application in different vehicle configurations and use scenario. For the packaging use case, the following questions are of interest: How can companies such as the ARA AG use the methods and tools developed in this CD-Laboratory to – (1) assess how sustainable and circular existing packaging solutions are – (2) to optimize packaging solutions from the viewpoint of sustainability and circularity?

About the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sustainable Product Management

More and more consumers are interested in how sustainably the products they want to purchase are produced. Accordingly, companies are striving to ensure that their products and services meet this demand. In order to help companies, the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Sustainable Product Management enabling a Circular Economy, together with iPoint and other innovative industry and scientific partners, conducts application-oriented research to create the scientific basis for sustainability assessments and support the transition toward a circular economy. In this three-part series, Prof. Dr. Rupert Baumgartner, Head of the Laboratory, and BA MSc Magdalena Rush from the project team, will introduce the project, its research outputs, and the partner ecosystem.
