PROVE ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

What is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)?
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized Type III declaration that provides transparent information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle. It is based on a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) that evaluates the environmental performance of the product from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal or recycling.

EPD standards and verification
How EPDs are created is regulated by the ISO 14025 standard. In Europe, there is also the EN 15804 standard, which specifies ISO 14025 specifically for the construction sector, defines the product category rules and regulates and requires verification. Such an third-party verification by an independent expert focuses mainly on plausibility, completeness and consistency.

What’s driving demand for EPDs
Products with EPDs are accepted or even required under various programmes for green building, such as LEED or BREEAM. Furthermore, EPDs can provide a significant competitive advantage, e.g. for green public procurement. Thus, a verified EPD can help a manufacturer become a preferred supplier by enabling buyers and stakeholders to make informed purchasing decisions.

Environmental Product Declaration Framework and Process

The EPD Framework - 4 Steps to Verification

  1. Product Category Rules (PCR)
Define the product, including functional unit and system boundaries. In addition, a suitable PCR should be selected from the international EPD system or, if no suitable PCR exists, a new one should be developed.

  2. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Gather data on the environmental impacts associated with the product throughout its entire lifecycle, including raw material extraction, production, use, and disposal and evaluate the collected data using LCA methodology.

  3. EPD Report
Prepare the EPD report according to the guidelines specified in the Product Category Rules (PCR) by compiling the LCA results in the EPD format documenting the methodology, data sources, assumptions, and results for each environmental indicator.

  4. EPD Verificiation & Registration
Verification by an independent third-party organization to ensure compliance with the relevant PCR, accuracy of data and methodology, and transparency of reporting. Once verified, register and publish the EPD, making it publicly available through online databases, company websites, or EPD registries.
